After an average outing with the 3rd installment of his Singam series last year, and with all his ventures in recent years, like Anjaan, Massu engira Maasilamani, 24 failing to set the box office on fire, Suriya has joined hands with Director Vignesh Shivan, who had last delivered the 2016 comedy Naanum Rowdythaan, to come up with the con comedy caper Thaana Serndha Koottam as a Pongal treat. Here's team AP Herald's exclusive Thaanaa Serndha Koottam first on net review.

Suriya and his gang, comprising of Ramya Krishnan, Senthil and Sathyan pose as CBI officers, and conduct raids to loot huge money. As they peacefully lead their lives while also planning next raids, enters Karthik as a special officer appointed to nab the Gang. Did Suriya and Gang succeed in their final mission or did they get caught by Karthik is what Thaanaa Serndha Koottam is all about.
Suriya is a livewire on screen, as he's at his Energetic best, be it the dialogue delivery or the stunning dance moves, or the casual wit, he amazes with his natural charm and lively screen presence and improved modulation. Ramya Krishnan is too good in her character. She reprises Anupam Kher role. While Senthil and Sathyan try hard to evoke laughs, it results in vain. Keerthy Suresh looks out of place for most part of the movie, and her performance is poor, with nervousness written all over. Karthik looks energetic and he reprises Manoj role from the original. At times he's made to look like a loud caricature with his wild antics that are rather annoying than appealing.

Anirudh's background score is adequate, while of his songs, none except Sodakku meet the expectations, as Peela, the title song and Naana thaana are forgettable. Dinesh Krishnan's Cinematography is top notch as it captures the 80s milieu recreated beautifully, while also presenting the songs colorfully. Editing is crisp and that's a big savior. After succeeding with an original movie Naanum Rowdythaan, this time around Vignesh Shivan has opted for a safe remake of the hit Bollywood flick Special 26, with a huge star like Suriya with him.

But to be honest, Vignesh Shivn has let go of an opportunity to recreate a massive entertainer, as he has completely messed with the screenplay, lacing it with an overdose of intended comedy, that actually bores than evoking laughs. The whole gang and their gameplan are made to look funny on screen, but end up as a joke on the audience, with only Suriya's act acting as a saving grace for the movie.  While Keerthy Suresh is given a funny role that's sure to be a subject of trolls, the rest of the cast including Veterans like Ramya Krishnan and Karthik are completely underutilized, making Thaanaa Serndha Koottam, a okayish experience, despite having a crisp runtime of just  a little more than 2 hours. All Said, with poor execution of a great plot and some interesting performances by Suriya and Ramya in vain, Thaana Serndha Koottam is just above the pass mark!
