Story

After the Abbas Mastan directorial action thriller franchise Race, with its first two installments came with Saif Ali Khan leading from the front, this time, the team has changed, as the third installment is all set to have Salman Khan racing ahead, with Remo D Souza at the helm of affairs. Here's team AP Herald's exclusive Race 3 review.

Samsher(Anil Kapoor) believes in Sikandar (Salman Khan), and gives him an assignment of a heist, a huge one, that also involves his team, a family, comprising of Jacqueline Fernandez, Bobby Deol, Daisy Shah and Saqib Salim. As the team plans to complete their heist mission successfully, Sikandar faces one trouble after the other but keeps thwarting them successfully, until he realizes that he is double-crossed by none other than his family. What happens when Sikandar retaliates and goes against the betrayers in his family and whether Sikandar was able to complete the heist is what Race 3 is all about.

Star Performance

Salman Khan as Sikandar is stone-faced throughout the movie, and probably the actor forgot that he is acting in Race 3, and not behind the bars for racing over the footpath - such a grim face throughout the movie. Bobby Deol and Anil Kapoor are the saving grace of the movie, as the former looks better than ever, and confidently performs stunts, and makes a mark, while the latter is at his stylish best, defying his age. Of the female leads, Jacqueline oozes oomph in the songs and that's it about her, while Daisy Shah prances around in skimpy attires mouthing the funniest and poorly written one-liners. The rest of the cast including Saqib Salim and Freddy Daruwala do not have much to do except accompanying Salman in his funny quest.

Techinical Team

While the background score by Salim Sulaiman is perfect for the action theme of the movie, of the songs, except Selfish and Allah Dulha hai, none of the tracks are impressive.  Cinematography by Ayananka Bose is top notch, capturing the visuals of high octane stunts and chases perfectly. Editing by Rameshwar Bhagwat could have been better, as the movie suffers from serious pace issues.

Director Remo D Souza, known for the dance hits ABCD and ABCD 2, had earlier tried his hands on a superhero flick with  A flying Jatt, which sank without a trace at the box office, and this time again he has come up with an action flick with Race 3.

Analysis

Taking over a successful franchise is no easy task, and that is what Remo has failed to understand, as he has probably decided, giving Salman all kinds of weapons and making him kill all, bash and thrash his enemies on screen alone might take a movie to success. Stone-faced Salman keeps mouthing silly punches, gives an inebriated look in the name of a romantic look, tries to sound funny, keeps flaunting his body and keeps attacking his enemies, but fails to do one thing that is much essential - acting. That's nowhere a part of Bhai's performance, and adding to that is a pathetic screenplay by Remo D Souza that is neither entertaining nor engaging, as it is very much predictable for any viewer to guess who double-crosses or who is set to turn the betrayer next.

The first half moves without much fuss and the second half drags big time and makes one wonder if this is an action thriller or a stage drama, as the whole movie is staged in a rather funny manner and never takes itself seriously till the very end. All said, Race 3 is the perfect example of how to murder a successful franchise, with overconfidence on the lead actor's charisma alone, and a perfect testimony that Salman's 6 or 8 packs alone can't save a movie when his facial muscles don't move at all. This is not a treat from Salman for Eid, but the fate of audience to waste their money on this no-brainer that is a  bore right from the word go.
