Taissa Farmiga is impressive in her act, while Bonnie Aarons owns the show with her Valak act, and generates the necessary scares with the screenplay supporting the cause occasionally. Demian Bachir is adequate, playing the investigative priest, while the rest of the cast including Jonas Bloquet are aptly cast in this horror flick.
Background score by Abel Korzeniowski generates the necessary scares at the right points, elevating the screenplay as much as possible, while Maxime Alexandre's cinematography captures the gothic locales and the scary episodes to perfection. Corin Hardy who had earlier directed "The Hallow" (2015), has made a return to films with "The Nun", and naturally, he must have faced the pressure of expectations. and hype, and whether he has lived up to the humungous expectations? It's a partial yes, as the movie falters due to a weakly designed screenplay and predictable sequences.
While there are several episodes in the second half that genuinely generate scares, the first hour of the movie moves at snail pace, establishing the characters without much impact or horror effect, and suffers from lack of engaging factor and scares. Bonnie Aarons is instantly terrifying, but the screenplay lacks the necessary elements to elevate the horror impact and make the scares genuine. and ultimately makes The Nun, one of the weakest in the Conjuring franchise. All said, Corin Hardy's The Nun does not come even remotely close to James Wan's previous ventures, but ends finally as a can watch average entertainer.
