Speaking in the assembly, EPS said that this announcement is made based on the recommendations of an expert panel constituted by former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. This ban, however, excludes disposable plastic for packaging milk, curd, oil and medical utilities.

But the ban is imposed on Plastic carry bags, plates, cups, flags, water sachets, etc. The plastic material which is dumped affects the drainage and also the groundwater table. Incidentally, this has been announced on World Environment Day.
